Let’s just remind ourselves of some of the risks when smoking:


·       Lung cancer

·       Stroke

·       Coronary heart disease – damaging blood vessels

·       Blockages due to smoking reduces blood flow to skin & legs


Cancer of the:

·       Trachea, bronchus and lungs

·       Throat

·       Larynx

·       Oropharynx (includes parts of the throat, tongue, soft palate, and the tonsils)

·       Stomach


Fertility – Smoking can make it more difficult for a woman to become pregnant and can affect men’s sperm. This may reduce fertility and also increase risks for birth defects and miscarriage.


Smoking may also affect baby’s health before and after birth:

·       Stillbirth (death of the baby before birth)

·       Preterm (early) delivery

·       Low birth weight

·       Sudden infant death syndrome (known as SIDS or crib death)

·       Ectopic pregnancy

·       Oro-facial clefts in infants


Other risk factors of Smoking:

·       Bone health affecting bone density (weaker bones)

·       Teeth (bone loss) and gum disease causing tooth loss

·       Risk for cataracts (clouding of the eye’s lens that makes it hard for you to see and Macular degeneration (damage to a small spot near the centre of the retina, the part of the eye needed for central vision)

·       Type 2 diabetes mellitus and can make it harder to control. The risk of developing diabetes is 30–40% higher for active smokers than non-smokers’.

·       Inflammation and adverse effects on immune function

·       Rheumatoid arthritis

Why is it so hard to stop smoking?

A study issued through the Journal of Applied Psychology demonstrates that hypnosis is 3 times more efficient at assisting someone give up smoking than nicotine replacement, and 15 times more efficient than making use of will power alone. Studies have shown that nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and willpower might not be the most effective methods in order to quit smoking; in reality, hypnotherapy has been described as being respectively 3 times and 15 times stronger.


Physical dependence on smoking typically has quite a small element in the total dependency. Generally, the obsession is embedded in the subconscious – the place where almost all of our habits and feelings stem from. It has been used in psychological treatments since the 1950s, when psychiatrist Milton H. Erickson showed the potential of hypnosis as an aid to traditional therapy. With hypnosis, people experience a state of complete mental, physical and emotional relaxation and a heightened state of awareness, which is a normal, natural and healthy state of mind.


It has often been likened to the feelings we experience just before drifting off to sleep or on waking. Some people say it feels like daydreaming. In itself, this is a very healing state. Dr Milton Erickson described the process of clinical hypnosis as “a free period in which individuality can flourish”.


When experiencing hypnosis, the conscious mind takes a rest and allows the hypnotherapist to tap into our subconscious (or unconscious mind) the storehouse of information using visualization, smells, tastes, feelings, and makes positive changes to thought patterns, habits or negative behaviours. You are not unconscious and you will be aware of the therapist talking to you throughout the session guiding you with positive suggestions to help the subconscious mind bring about positive changes to your unwanted habits.


Because it is a state of natural deep relaxation, there will be many times in our daily lives we have experienced hypnosis without being aware of it because our subconscious mind takes over. It is safe, and effective.
